Simms History
Thomas Stockwell Simms launched the Simms Company in 1866. As an American Civil War Veteran, he invested his soldiers’ bonus and back pay in a small brush and broom enterprise in Portland, Maine. This start-up operation opted to move to Saint John, NB in 1872. Saint John became famous world-wide for their contributions to shipbuilding.
Thomas Simms was a gifted man who endured through a number of hardships. He lost two wives and suffered a terribly devastating factory fire. He continued to strive forward despite these disasters and forged his organization ahead.
Simms was an enthusiastic traveller. During the 1900s, he was one of the primary brush manufacturers to travel to China to directly purchase bristles. He took part in the lay missionary initiative. The Simms Memorial Baptist Church is situated in India and is considered to be a significant enterprise.
Lewis Wesley Simms
After the founding father passed away in 1908, Lewis Wesley Simms took over managing the Company. For the next fifty years, he served as President. His potent personality and demanding presence made him a dominant leader. This business grew from a localized start to a nationwide expansion. Lewis Simms revolutionized the brush-creation industry by automating it and supporting it. Lewis Simms excelled in the Canadian industry arena and found national acceptance. He had become the President of the Canadian Manufacturing Association as well as Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
LW Simms was posthumously inducted into the Canadian Hardware Houseware Manufacturing Association’s Industry Hall of Fame along with the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame. Thomas Stockwell Simms III, the great-grandson of the founder, maintained the traditions of dependability and high-quality that the business was founded on.
